Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail

Stunning Year-Round

Distance
15.6km

Trail type
Loop

Elevation
478m

Level
Moderate

Spanning 15.6 km over 478 m of elevation, the Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail offers a moderately challenging journey along the shores of this alpine lake – passing under thick overgrowth and offering endless glimpses of shimmering waters. Between the lakeside views and towering peaks that surround the natural lake, this hike offers a taste of all that the Kananaskis wilderness has to offer.

This hike’s main challenge comes in the form of distance rather than elevation change, making its well-maintained trail a great choice for families, experienced explorers and everyone in between. It is recommended to take it counter-clockwise, as this lets you start with some of this trail’s most scenic views, but it can be taken in either direction.

The lake is often joined in conversation by its counterpart: Lower Kananaskis Lake. They are two of the largest lakes in the area aside from Spray Lakes Reservoir. The lakes have become synonymous with some of the best hikes in Kananaskis Country

Where Is It

This trail’s popularity is due in part to its accessibility. To access the trailhead, follow the Trans-Canada Hwy/AB-1 and Kananaskis Trail/AB-40 S to Kananaskis Lakes Trail/AB-742 in Kananaskis.

The drive from Calgary to the Upper Kananaskis Lakes trail takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes, taking in part of one of Alberta’s most scenic drives. Upon your arrival, you have a few parking options to choose from – including parking at the Upper Kananaskis Lake Day Use Area. From there, begin your journey toward the North Interlakes Day Use area until you are met with signs presenting you with the option of an upper or lower path. You can take either. Continue along through the trees, enjoying the shimmering alpine lake views that peek through the foliage. Eventually, you’ll loop back to the parking lot.

Trail Highlights

The Upper Kananaskis Lakes Trail is close to several Kananaskis campsites and accommodation options, including the Kananaskis Interlakes Campground. This proximity and its notably engrossing views make the area a hotspot for an array of summer and winter activities. Upper Kananaskis Lake is significantly deeper than Lower Kananaskis Lake, reaching a maximum depth of 111m and making it an ideal spot for fishing, boating, or having an afternoon picnic. Kayak, canoe, and sup rentals are available at Kananaskis Outfitters if you’re looking to supplement your adventure with some water sports.

As you travel through this trail’s winding woods, you’ll experience an array of picturesque scenery. Enchanting waterfalls cascade gracefully, while vibrant patches of wildflowers beckon you forward as you navigate the pristine sapphire lake.

The area is frequently inhabited by large wildlife like black bears, grizzly bears, and moose. Wildlife is seen so frequently in this area that carrying bear spray, while always essential in bear country, deserves an extra reminder for this trail.

Return Trip

The Upper Kananaskis hike is a loop trail that will see you eventually return to your starting point regardless of the direction you take. Approximately 4km into the hike you’ll approach the interlake section of the trail, which will require you to traverse rocky terrain from a slide. Simply turn around near this distance point if you want to avoid it. For those seeking an exhilarating experience, venturing through the interlake section can be a rewarding endeavour.

See you on the trails!

Tips

  • Bring extra supplies. While this hike isn’t technically difficult, it’s long enough that you’ll need plenty of water, proper hiking gear, and any other supplies that will keep you guys for 5+ hours.
  • Make sure to check the forecast before you go so you don’t get stranded in inclement weather.
