However, some may see Kananaskis as more ‘rugged’ than family-friendly, but that could not be further from the truth. Below we highlight the top activities in Kananaskis for children of all ages, because it’s never too early to gain an appreciation for the wonders of Mother Nature!

Happy Trails Daycare

Little ones will receive a dose of fun as parents take a moment to relax at Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge’s Happy Trails Daycare. Children can let their imaginations soar as they listen to stories, play games, and create crafts – all while making new friends in the Children’s Creative Centre.

The centre’s large woodland-themed play area comes equipped with a sizable indoor playground, interactive floor ‘iPad’, chalk walls, and more. The Lodge itself also offers spacious family guest rooms, making this a destination both kid-friendly and kid-approved.  

Happy Trails Daycare is available for children aged 1 – 10 and is open from 11:00 AM -7:00 PM daily (except Wednesdays).

Pony Ride at Boundary Ranch

Introduce your little one to the wild west with a pony ride at Boundary Ranch. For 15 minutes, children 5 and under can meet and ride a horse for the first time among the natural wonders of Kananaskis. 

Staff will lead children on their chosen pony as they experience a brief ride around the ranch. Rides are subject to availability and are offered at a rate of $25.00 per child.

Mini’s Adventure Camp

Mini’s Adventure Camp gives children the opportunity to learn about the beauty of Kananakis’ boundless mountains and curious critters through play. Children will learn about Kananakis’ native plants and animals as camp coordinators utilise activities including crafts, games, and science. 

Located in the Children’s Creative Centre at Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge at a rate of $70.00 per child for a half-day (10:00 AM -2:00 PM), and $100.00 per child for a full day (10:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

Holiday Events

Holidays are especially magical in Kananaskis. Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge is known for their holiday celebrations including “Merry Kananaskis” and Halloween activities like their Trick-Or-Treat Scavenger Hunt and Haunted House. 

The lodge has become famous for its annual immersive winter wonderland that encapsulates the magic of the holiday season in the “land of a million Christmas Trees.”

Every year’s events and special guests are announced in October, so be sure to keep an eye out for events that will be sure to create long-lasting magical memories for parents and children alike.

Boat rentals with Kananaskis Outfitters

Explore the crystal calm waters of Barrier Lake by canoe or kayak with Kananaskis Outfitters. Paddling the man-made lake is a popular summertime activity for locals and tourists alike as visitors appreciate the spectacular views of surrounding Mt Baldy and Yates Mountain.

All ages and abilities are welcome to join in on the fun, making this a great way for kids to experience nature while staying active. Rentals are offered on a first-come-first-serve basis at a rate of $50.00 for the first hour, and $35.00 for an additional hour.

Nakiska Tube Park

With no skill required, children can safely experience a rush of winter adrenaline as they speed down the snowy slopes at Nakiska Tube Park. And with the ‘magic carpet lift’ available to give them endless rides back to the top of the hill, the fun will just keep on coming. 

The tube park is the largest in western Canada, making it a unique experience your kids will surely remember. 

Nakiska Tube Park is open on holidays and weekends during the ski season from 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM. Children under 5 are free alongside a paying adult and children, youth, and adults pay between $24.00 – $32.00 for 2 hours.

Golf in Kananaskis Country

Help your child develop their golf skills amidst the unbelievable majesty of Kananaskis Country Golf Course. The course has added several shorter tee’s following the 2013 floods, making it more accessible for grown-up, and not-so-grown-up, golf newbies to get acquainted with the game.

Afterwards, visit one of the Summit Restaurant’s two patios to refuel while enjoying the spectacular mountain views overlooking the course.

Visitors staying at one of the surrounding Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge, Crosswaters Resort, or Mount Kidd Manor can utilise “Stay and Play” packages to receive a discounted rate. Children play for free during twilight times with a paying adult.

Indoor Waterpark at Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge

Children can splash, swim, and slide in Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge’s indoor waterpark. Faux trees, mountain ranges, and forest animals are scattered throughout the mountain-themed waterpark, offering ample opportunity for little imaginations to swim free. 

No reservations are required, and lodge visitors can visit for free. The waterpark is open daily from 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM.

Wellness in the Rockies – Mountain Yoga

Breathe in the mountain air and listen to the sounds of K-Country as you experience a moment of serenity in the rocky mountains. Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge offers mountain yoga classes that will allow you and your teen to unplug while staying present.

Depending on the weather, classes are either held in the lodge’s sports field or the Wildflower Room in Mount Kidd Manor. Morning yoga classes are offered from 9-10 am every Saturday and Sunday, with afternoon classes offered periodically throughout the summer.

Hike at Troll Falls

The Troll Falls Trail is a year-round favourite, and for good reason. This out-and-back trail only takes about 90 minutes to complete and is easily accessible for the whole family with its packed-down gravel and dirt trail.

Filled with Instagram-worthy photo ops, your teen will surely enjoy revelling in and capturing the natural wonders of Kananaskis.

Suspension Bridge Sightseeing Tour

Appease your teens inner dare-devil with a sightseeing tour to the Black Shale Suspension Bridge. You will meet at Kananaskis Outfitters in Kananaskis Village before embarking on a 6km round-trip hike to reach the 240 foot bridge. 

Those fearless enough to venture onto the bridge will be rewarded with incredible views of the alpine landscape as you cross the ravine below. After braving the bridge try a visit to Upper Kananaskis Lake for an indulgent– and very social-media worthy– charcuterie lunch.

Stargazing Tour with Kananaskis Outfitters

Point out constellations and become one with the stars with Kananaskis Outfitters Stargazing Tour. Upon departing Kananaskis Village, groups will enter an open meadow where they will gaze into the starry abyss, discuss astrology, and try out a telescope.

Aspiring astrologers will be supplied with a headlamp and snowshoes and be accompanied by a guide on this explorative adventure.
