Kananaskis is world-renowned for its unmatched sprawling mountain landscapes, untouched alpine waters and majestic flora and fauna. Many of the awe-inspiring views we see gracing social media are the result of hours of hard work – trekking and scrambling up one of K-Country’s many rocky giants.

That being said, Kananaskis is home to so many trails that reaching an astonishing view can be done in a myriad of ways – from easy hikes to scrambles that test our limits. These hikes are great picks for families, seniors or those looking for a lighter day with the same amazing alpine views Kananaskis is known for.

Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail: Short Version

Distance
7.7km

Trail type
Out & Back

Elevation
154m

Level

Time
2 Hours

Upper Kananaskis Lake is a favourite K-Country destination – offering unmatched views of the surrounding upper and lower lakes. Approximately two hours out of Calgary, explorers can reach the trailhead by following the Trans-Canada Highway west, and Kananaskis Trail to Kananaskis Lakes Trail.

The trail runs across the lake’s shoreline and offers two possible trail options. The first, shorter version of the Upper Kananaskis Lake trail is an out-and-back hike – taking explorers through 7.7km of picturesque scenery. Alternatively, the second option allows visitors to continue along the entirety of the lake rather than turning around – a moderately challenging loop spanning 15.6km.

Both options entail crossing a small bridge over burbling books of alpine runoff before continuing down long-stretching paths of wooded wilderness. Eventually, the final push towards the ridge will reward you with panoramic lake views. This hike is a great option for those who aren’t quite sure if they’re up to the full trek and want to keep their options open. The shorter option only sees 154m of elevation and most of the trail is paved or gravel, making this a realistic and satisfying feat for varying fitness levels.

During the winter months, the area is popular for snowshoeing as its expansive but gradually inclining trails offer neverending views of the pristine frozen winterscape. In the summer, the lake becomes a favourite for taking an icy dip in alpine waters – letting you cool off– or perk back up– after your oh-so-tranquil hike.

Another favourite hike, Troll Falls has become synonymous with the best hikes in Kananaskis. Winding trails surround multiple waterfalls, taking you on a mystical journey through this wooded wonderland. It’s a common recommendation for those seeking a taste of Alberta’s unmatched nature without the workout, and since it’s just an hour’s drive out of Calgary, it’s an excellent quick tick on your bucket list. Take the Trans-Canada Highway west to Kananaskis Trail.

Troll Falls is an easy out-and-back route that takes waterfall wanderers up a straight-forward 154m of elevation across 3.4km. The hike can be completed by nearly any age and skill level and offers two possible endpoints. Visitors can enjoy overhead or underfoot views of the trail’s namesake waterfall. The first option brings hikers to the bottom to enjoy the sounds and sights of cascading waterfalls.

Alternatively, hikers can continue on to the top of the falls, where a creek resides among additional waterfalls. Microspikes and poles will be helpful to those visiting in the winter or springtime – especially if you plan on visiting the upper falls as well.

Troll Falls used to be known for some of its residents – troll dolls, scattered throughout the forest by locals making a joke of the trail’s name. However, the dolls have been removed in recent years and visitors are asked to keep them at home to prevent any potential impact on the area’s nature or wildlife.

This wouldn’t really be a list of epic yet easy hikes in Kananaskis without mentioning the Blackshale Suspension Bridge. Since its construction in 2017, the Blackshale Suspension Bridge has quickly become a staple of Kananaskis ‘adventure activities. Once again, follow the Trans-Canada Hwy W and Kananaskis Trail S before turning onto Kananaskis Lakes Trail. The bridge is easily accessible, taking only a few minutes to walk from the parking lot before you reach this adrenaline-inducing destination.

The bridge spans 117 meters across a ravine and rests 65 meters above the valley floor, so it’s not for the faint of heart! However, the views from the bridge are truly spectacular, making it a great spot to snap some photos and take in the natural beauty of the area. Beyond the bridge, the trail continues along the ridge and eventually loops back to the trailhead. It has become such a popular outing for good reason, with the panoramic overhead views of the Kananaskis Valley wowing even the most seasoned adventurers.

Being such a short hike, the Blackshale Suspension Bridge is a great option for families or those with limited mobility as its low-commitment but offers plenty of opportunity to explore the areas of nature and enjoy a rush of excitement. In fact, Kananaskis Outfitters even offers a suspension bridge and sightseeing tour, giving you the opportunity to learn even more about this remarkable area.

Chester Lake and jaw-dropping views go hand-in-hand. This trail is renowned for its picturesque nature year-round – offering otherworldly views of snow-covered fields in winter, sprawling rocky meadows in the summer, and perhaps most notably, bright golden larch trees in the fall. Clearly, Chester Lake deserves a seat at the table when talking about scenic hikes – whatever skill level is in discussion.

Thankfully, this trail and its epic views are accessible by a moderate trek up a gradual incline before completing the journey on relatively level terrain. Upon reaching the lake itself, you will be welcomed by stunning views of the surrounding mountain peaks reflected in the turquoise waters – framed by the imposing and rugged Mount Chester.

After taking in nature’s hard work for a while, you can follow the trail around the perimeter of the lake. If you’re still looking for more exploration, you can take the quick jaunt down the Three Lakes Valley Trail to see Chester Lake’s iconic Elephant Rocks.
